Standing together in a landscape this powerful can make the day feel bigger than a wedding ceremony or a photoshoot. It becomes an experience you share and remember together.

Why elope in the Dolomites?
The Dolomites are a beautiful choice for an elopement because they give you both incredible scenery and a lot of freedom in how you shape the day.
You can exchange vows beside a turquoise lake, take a scenic drive through the mountains, go for a short hike, stop for lunch in a mountain hut, relax at a spa, or finish the day with aperitivo in Cortina. The experience can be adventurous, accessible, relaxed, or more refined.
The landscape also makes the day feel bigger than a traditional ceremony. The distinctive peaks and constantly changing light create an atmosphere that feels dramatic, cinematic, and almost unreal.
They can also work beautifully for couples who want a quieter and more intimate experience. Complete privacy cannot always be guaranteed at the most famous locations, especially in peak season. However, choosing a weekday, planning around the best times, and scouting less-known spots can make the day feel much calmer.
Do you need to hike for a Dolomites elopement?
No. A Dolomites elopement is not only for experienced hikers. Many lakes, passes, and viewpoints can be reached by car. Other locations require only a short walk. Some areas are also accessible by cable car, depending on the season.
The experience can be tailored to you:
- No hike: drive to a lake, mountain pass, hotel, or viewpoint.
- Short walk: around 20 to 30 minutes on a manageable path.
- Moderate hike: around 30 minutes to one hour, with steeper sections.
- Full adventure: several hours of hiking before sunrise, with wedding clothes carried in a backpack.
Even for a short walk, I recommend proper hiking shoes. You can carry your wedding shoes and change when you reach the final location. The goal is not to plan the most adventurous route possible. It is to create a day that suits your real fitness level and the kind of experience you will enjoy.
What are the best Dolomites elopement locations?
Lago di Braies
Lago di Braies is famous for its turquoise water, wooden boats, and dramatic mountain backdrop. The best time to experience it is early in the morning, when the lake feels quieter and the light is softer. It is possible to reserve the dock privately and use the boats before the area becomes busy. This makes it a beautiful setting for an intimate ceremony and private vows. After the ceremony on the dock, couples can stroll around the lake for portraits, enjoy the views from different angles, and then stop for breakfast before continuing with the rest of the day.
Lago di Dobbiaco is a quieter alternative to Lago di Braies. It does not offer the same private dock or boat experience, but it gives us more flexibility. It can work later in the day or towards the evening. It is a good choice for portraits, a picnic, or a relaxed stop within a longer itinerary.
Tre Cime di Lavaredo gives you the full dramatic mountain experience. From the parking area near Rifugio Auronzo, some incredible viewpoints can be reached with a 30 to 40-minute walk. Experienced hikers may find it easy, but there are a few steeper sections. The area can work for private vows, couple portraits, or a small symbolic ceremony. Guests would need suitable shoes and should be comfortable walking. Access passes and parking must be organised in advance.
Depending on your vision, I may also suggest:
- Alpe di Siusi for open meadows and softer alpine scenery
- Val Gardena for unreal mountain views and hiking options
- Passo Giau for dramatic scenery with easier road access
- Cortina d’Ampezzo for hotels, restaurants, gelato, and aperitivo

What is the best time to elope in the Dolomites?
My favourite periods are from mid-June and during September into early October.
By mid-June, the snow usually starts clearing from more accessible areas. The landscape becomes greener, and the lakes have the turquoise colour many couples imagine.
September is often quieter than peak summer. Early October can also be beautiful, although the weather becomes colder and snow may arrive at higher altitudes.
Even in summer, temperatures can be around 10°C or 50°F early in the morning or at higher elevations. Layers are essential.
I do not recommend winter as strongly. Snow-covered mountains can be beautiful, but the frozen lakes create a very different experience. I prefer the colour and variety of the warmer seasons.
How can you avoid crowds and bad weather?
The most famous Dolomites locations can become busy, especially in July, August, and on weekends. To create a more private experience, I recommend:
- choosing a weekday
- arriving at sunrise
- avoiding peak summer when possible
- reserving private access where available
- using quieter locations for the vows
- visiting iconic viewpoints mainly for portraits
At Tre Cime, people sometimes queue for one specific picture-perfect spot. Your experience does not need to revolve around waiting for the same photograph as everyone else.
Weather is another important part of the planning process. Mountain conditions can change quickly, and one valley may have completely different weather from another.
We can often rearrange the plan within the same day. Sunrise might become sunset, or we may move to another valley or lower-altitude lake.
When your travel plans allow it, I strongly recommend keeping the day before or after the elopement available as a weather buffer.
Can you legally get married in the Dolomites?
My general advice is to complete the legal part of the marriage at home.
A legal ceremony in Italy involves paperwork and restrictions around where the official wedding can take place. Handling that process can add unnecessary stress to your trip.
Once the legal part is complete, you are free to exchange private vows in the mountains.
You could have:
- private vows with just the two of you
- a symbolic ceremony
- a celebrant-led ceremony
- a ring or letter exchange
What does a Dolomites elopement timeline look like?
An 8-hour Dolomites elopement can work beautifully with split coverage. This gives you the best morning and evening light without making the day feel too long.
A possible timeline could look like this:
- Early morning: Get ready at accommodation close to Lago di Braies.
- Sunrise: Exchange private vows on the reserved dock, take a boat ride, and stroll around the lake for portraits.
- Late morning: Stop for breakfast before returning to your hotel.
- Midday: Enjoy a long break, spa time, or a slow lunch.
- Late afternoon: Drive towards Tre Cime di Lavaredo and begin the short hike from Rifugio Auronzo.
- Sunset: Explore the mountains and take portraits as the light changes.
- Evening: Finish with aperitivo, dinner, or a relaxed return to your hotel.
How do you plan a Dolomites elopement with a local photographer?
